"The Crazy Bone" ![]() This is one of the coolest specimens of petrified wood that ever came into my possession. It had a really wild shape that made it a piece of natural sculpture -- I named it "The Crazy Bone". It had well defined bark, knots, and wood grain, and an incredibly detailed surface -- including an interesting "granulated" texture on one side of the piece (I've only ever seen this texture on petrified wood from this locality, and then only rarely). The specimen was so perfect that I didn't dare cut it! It was collected over forty-five years ago in the region around the Nebraska/South Dakota border, where I'm told that petrified wood is now scarce. It probably doesn't look like much in this photo (I wish I had taken a better picture), but for sheer aesthetics, this piece just can't be beat; it's a great example of the kinds of unusual features that can make a specimen incredibly rare and valuable. I sold The Crazy Bone back in 2001...every now and then I get sentimental and I wish I had held onto it, because I know I will never see another piece like this one in my lifetime! |
